DATE: June 8, 2025 (D-Day!)
SUBJECT: MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! Successful Launch of "Sponsor a Soldier" Initiative!

This morning, we officially launched our "Sponsor a Soldier" initiative to the congregation of Sherbrooke Mosspark Church, and I'm thrilled to report it was a resounding success! For those of you who might have been undercover in the congregation (you know who you are!), and for our operatives currently on overseas manoeuvres, please receive this official comms via WhatsApp.
As our motto proudly declares, "The Sherbrooke Yarn Stormers knit for fun and share with others what they’ve done." And this morning, we certainly shared!
Remember back in January, when we had the slightly mad idea to knit some soldiers for Remembrance Sunday? We set a target of 10 each by June 6th, thinking that would give us ages to figure out what to do with them. Little did we know the King and country would be going into full commemoration mode for D-Day's 80th anniversary!
But we threw ourselves into it. The reception room became our "Map Room," and our meetings were run with military precision (mostly!). The soldiers just kept coming – a whole platoon from the Merchants Gate flats, another from the Avenues. Our recruitment was relentless! We even had an S.O.E. agent in Cambridge whose soldiers arrived with actual love letters in their rucksacks. (I even self-promoted to Major Mags – someone had to go to the top, and everyone else seemed happy with Staff Sergeant status! Though we did have to appoint a medical officer to oversee the stitching up of all those tiny limbs!)

Out of this ambitious idea, we had so much laughter, learned incredible stories about our families in the forces, their challenges, their love letters, their codes, and the legacies they left. We didn't just meet our target; we over-achieved and knitted 120 soldiers! These knitted heroes have truly become symbols of gratitude and respect, bringing history to life in a way that's warm, creative, and deeply meaningful. We hope you all liked our D-Day Landing display!

Sponsor a Soldier: 80 for 80!
Now, for the next phase of our mission! On the train back from one of our strategic thinking meetings in Millport (yes, the soldiers came too and stormed the beaches, and thankfully, all returned safely!), we came up with our plan for this year's Remembrance Sunday: 80 soldiers for 80 years since VE Day.

We're inviting everyone to "Sponsor a Soldier" – you can even join the S.A.S. (Sponsor a Soldier, of course!). For a suggested donation of just £5, you can symbolically adopt one of our knitted figures. This isn't just about the soldier; it's a powerful way to honour a personal memory. You can sponsor a soldier in memory of your own family member who served, or perhaps someone from our very own parish who made the ultimate sacrifice.
To help make that connection, we have our special remembrance books right here in the sanctuary, meticulously compiled by Seona and her late husband, John Maguire. They list the names of those from our parish who fell during both World Wars. You might discover a hero who lived very near to you, or even in your present home!
Just this past Thursday, I met with Aileen Bingham. Her parents married when war was declared in 1914, and her father, an officer, fought at Gallipoli alongside his friend William Leggat from this parish. Aileen shared that they were both tragically shot on the same day. Those words hit me.  Sadly, William died on July 1st, 1915, in a hospital in Malta. Aileen has chosen to sponsor a soldier for her father's friend, William. On Remembrance Sunday, his soldier will carry a flag with his details, just as recorded in the remembrance book.

All money raised through this "Sponsor a Soldier" initiative will go directly to Erskine Hospital
, doing vital work for our veterans. This initiative will run from now until Remembrance Sunday, giving everyone plenty of time to consider their sponsorship.

It's a way for all of us in this parish to keep these brave soldiers' memories alive, share their stories, and support a charity that truly continues to serve those who served us.

Thank you again to every Yarn Stormer, especially those dotted about the congregation going undercover! And a massive thank you to Captain Rory, our church officer, who built the set – he's currently on manoeuvres in Barcelona but will receive his comms! Our two officers overseas will also get their WhatsApp updates; they like to keep in touch!

Major Mags!

During WWII, the Ministry of Food (MoF) actively  encouraged home baking with rationed ingredients and substitutes. Many of their biscuit recipes focused on being economical and providing sustenance, often using honey, oats, or carrots to add sweetness and bulk due to sugar shortages.

Here's a popular Wartime Honey Biscuit recipe, similar to those found in Ministry of Food leaflets. It uses common rationed ingredients and is designed to be simple and relatively quick.

Ministry of Food - Wartime Honey Biscuits
This recipe aims to make the most of limited sugar and fat rations, using honey for sweetness.
Yields: Approx. 45 small biscuits (as per original MoF notes) Prep time: 15-20 minutes Bake time: 8-12 minutes
Ingredients:
  • 2.5 oz (approx. 70g) Margarine (or butter, if available)
  • 1 oz (approx. 30g) Caster Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Honey (liquid honey works best)
  • 6 oz (approx. 175g) Self-Raising Flour
  • Pinch of Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon or Ginger (optional, but spices were available and could add flavour)

Equipment:
  • Mixing bowl
  • Wooden spoon or hand mixer
  • Rolling pin
  • Cookie cutters (small rounds are typical)
  • Baking tray

Instructions:
  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) / Gas Mark 4. Lightly grease a baking tray, or line it with baking paper.
  2. Cream Fat and Sugar: In a mixing bowl, cream together the margarine (or butter) and sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy. This can be done vigorously with a wooden spoon for true wartime spirit!
  3. Add Honey: Stir in the honey until well combined with the creamed mixture.
  4. Incorporate Dry Ingredients: Sift in the self-raising flour and salt. If using, add the cinnamon or ginger. Mix well by hand to form a firm dough. The dough should come together, but if it feels a little too dry to bind, you can add a tiny splash (half a teaspoon) of milk or water, but be careful not to make it sticky.
  5. Roll Out Dough: Lightly flour your work surface. Roll out the dough very thinly – the original recipes often suggested around 1/4 inch (about 6mm) thick, keeping in mind the need to make the most of ingredients.
  6. Cut Biscuits: Use small cookie cutters to cut out as many biscuits as you can from the rolled dough. Gather the scraps and re-roll to cut more.
  7. Bake: Place the cut biscuits on your prepared baking tray.
  8. Bake: Bake for 8 to 12 minutes, depending on the thickness of your biscuits and your oven. They should be lightly golden brown at the edges.
  9. Cool: Carefully remove the biscuits from the oven and transfer them to a wire cooling rack to cool completely. They will crisp up further as they cool.

These biscuits are simple, satisfying, and a true taste of wartime ingenuity!

  • Option 2 (Car): Carpooling is encouraged. Please coordinate if you are able to offer or require a lift to Largs Harbour.
Mission Objectives:
  1. Supply Acquisition: A crucial element of our mission involves a visit to the local knitting shop in Millport. This will provide an opportunity to discover new tactical fibres and boost the local economy.
  2. Strategic Refuelling: We will undertake a vital lunch break to ensure optimal energy levels.  A suitable location will be identified by Staff Sergeant Morven.
  3. DD Landing Practice: We will engage in essential practice for our upcoming D-Day Landings representation. This will involve coordinating knitted soldier deployment strategies on the beach.
  4. Photo Shoot at the Crocodile: To commemorate our successful mission, we will be conducting a photo shoot at the iconic crocodile statue in Millport.  Please ensure you have your most photogenic knitted creations ready for their close-up.  Bring with you a suitable hat!
  5. Kite Flying Competition: This assessment aims to provide insights into the group's ability to collaborate on a practical task, and communicate effectively to achieve a common goal.  We will work in three teams because we have three kites.  The first kite in the sky will win.

This excursion to Millport promises to be a productive and enjoyable opportunity for both planning and camaraderie.  Please confirm your attendance and intended mode of transport to The Major at our next meeting on Tuesday 6th May 2025.

Wednesday 2nd April 2025
This morning I have emailed the following proposal to the Session Clerk.

Proposal: Joint Commemorative Display - D-Day Anniversary Sunday 8th June 2025
To: The Session Clerk
From: The Sherbrooke Yarn Stormers
Subject: Joint Display: Knitted Poppy Display & Sherbrooke Yarn Stormers Normandy Landings Representation
Proposal:
This proposal outlines a plan to create a powerful and moving commemorative display in the church sanctuary on Sunday, 8th June 2025, to mark the 81st anniversary of the D-Day Landings. We propose to combine two distinct but complementary elements:
  1. Knitted Poppy Display: Display of knitted poppies, symbolising remembrance and sacrifice, will serve as a poignant reminder of the lives lost during the Normandy Landings and World War II.
  2. Sherbrooke Yarn Stormers Normandy Landings Representation: The Sherbrooke Yarn Stormers, will  create a unique knitted representation of the Normandy Landings. This will feature 81 knitted soldiers, each representing a year since the D-Day landings, providing a tangible and visually impactful tribute. This will be displayed in the area beside the other tributes to those lost during war.
Rationale:
  • Commemoration: This display will coincide with national events throughout the UK, ensuring our church participates in this significant act of remembrance.
Logistics:
  • Installation: We propose to install the display in the church sanctuary on the morning of Friday 6th June until the morning of Monday 9th June 2025.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Map Room Minutes
Date: Tuesday, 18/3/25
Time: 13:00 - 15:00
Location: Map Room
Attendees: 10 Platoon Officers
Leave of Absence: 3 Platoon Officers

1. Call to Order: 13:00

2. Attendance: Attendance was taken and confirmed. Three officers were noted as being on approved leave of absence.  One somewhere under cover in the Atlantic.   We all agreed photographic evidence is needed.  Another seeking medical advice.  We all agreed lets hope its not Trench Foot.  Another dealing with care of the elderly.   We all agreed a certificate of dedication would be awarded at our next meeting.

3. Objectives Review: The meeting focused on reviewing and discussing current platoon objectives. All attendees engaged in focused discussions on strategies and progress.  As a group we are ahead of target.

4. New Recruits Introduction: Two new recruits, joining us from undisclosed locations, were introduced to the attending officers. The recruits were welcomed and provided with an overview of current activities and objectives.  Help was given to one about  increasing a stitch.  The other on the right size of pins.  Supplies were given from our equipment store.

5. Sergeant Sheila's Achievement: Sergeant Sheila was congratulated on, successfully completing a platoon of ten knitted soldiers. Her craftsmanship and dedication were commended.  Photographs were taken as evidence.  A certificate of commendation will be issued at our next meeting.

6. Discussion on Advertising Merits: The meeting included a discussion on the merits of good advertising for recruitment and public awareness. Various strategies and potential avenues were explored.  We used the latest Glenmorangie whisky advert as an example and all agreed it covered the location of equipment admirably and  a good example for us to follow.

7. Discussion on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD):  We all agreed combat exposure can lead to PTSD, characterized by flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, and hyper-vigilance.   Our thoughts went out to soldiers during the  first and second world wars because PTSD hadn't been discovered then.  You just got shot for desertion or took to the drink.  We forgot to mention our very own Soldier Dyson who was recently sucked up a hoover.

8. Next Meeting: The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, 1st April 2025 at 13:00 in the Map Room.  Come prepared to give un update on your objectives.

9. Attendance Policy: Attendance at the next meeting is compulsory unless a leave of absence note is provided and approved 24hrs prior to the meeting.

10. Adjournment: 15:00

Minutes on D-Day Display:
Main Display:
•  D-Day Landing; beach scene. 1/2 sand, 1/2 water
•  display on east transept table (2’ x 5’ x2 , total surface area 4’ x 5’)
•  build beach half out of insulation/oasis foam painted yellow, taking advantage of foam’s sandy texture. It is also easy to pin the soldiers and models into foam, and does not create too much mess in the sanctuary
•  construct sea half out of blue fabric, with netting and stuffing layer underneath to give the appearance of waves, and white cotton highlights on top to give the appearance of sea foam
•  Rory will build landing craft models that will have capacity for a unit of woollen soldiers each
•  yarnstormers will knit x80 soldiers for display on land and at sea, including some that are just torsos that can be placed amongst the waves giving impression of soldiers wading ashore.
•  yarnstormers will knit tank traps, spare rifles and helmets to litter the beach with to fill space

Secondary Displays
•  suggested by Una, create smaller dioramas on foam squares for display elsewhere in the church, on pedestals and tables, using surplus soldiers (whatever is knitted after the objective of 80 is achieved.

Special Report from Captain Witter [retired army catering core] received at 15:00 hrs today

Agent H.B.I has reported a strange mixture of issues amongst some of her soldiers. It is believed that they will be unsuitable for normal operations and should form a special platoon to guard against invasion of the local area instead of being deployed elsewhere.

This soldiers exhibit features such as: a strange elephantitis, where only one leg is swollen more than the other; many limp due to bent bones in their legs and damage caused in the great war; a number of heads which fall to one side or the other; Due to a shortage of supplies, many have boots with holes in them; and many carry substitute for rifles, such as brooms and rakes which will amuse the enemy rather than frighten them!

It is suggested that all agents should identify such people and notify agent H.B.I.  All such soldiers can be formed into a unit known as “the home guard“.

This new unit will parade on a Saturday morning and will provide much needed lightness of heart for spectators lining the local high Street.

End of special report which is, of course, in confidence
